Instructions
Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions but leave the root end intact. Place the onion root-side up on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, make 8-12 evenly spaced cuts from the top down towards the root, stopping about half an inch from the root. Gently open the onion layers to create a bloom.
Make the Flour Dredge: In a shallow bowl, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 tsp paprika, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, and a pinch of cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well.
Dredge the Onions: Thoroughly dredge each bloomed onion in the seasoned flour mixture, ensuring all crevices are coated. Gently shake off any excess flour.
Prepare the Batter: In another shallow bowl, whisk together 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup cornstarch, 1/2 tsp paprika, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp onion powder, 1 cup milk, and 1 large egg until smooth and no lumps remain.
Batter the Onions: Dip each flour-dredged onion into the prepared wet batter, allowing any excess to drip off. Ensure an even coating.
Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for at least 5 minutes.
Air Fry: Lightly spray each coated onion with cooking spray or brush with a thin layer of oil. Place the onions in the preheated air fryer basket, ensuring not to overcrowd. Cook in batches if necessary.
