- 1 loaf (16 oz) French or Challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened and cut into small cubes
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons coarse sugar or additional granulated sugar
- Maple syrup and extra strawberries, for serving
Instructions
- Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- Spread half of the bread cubes evenly in the prepared dish. Scatter the cream cheese cubes and most of the sliced strawberries over the bread. Top with the remaining bread cubes.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, heavy cream, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined and smooth.
- Slowly and evenly pour the custard mixture over the bread layers. Use a spatula to gently press down. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or ideally overnight.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the fridge, discard the plastic, and sprinkle the top with the coarse sugar.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Let it cool for 5-10 minutes. Top with remaining fresh strawberries and a generous drizzle of warm maple syrup before serving.
