Description

Creamy homemade caramelized onion dip recipe Easy appetizer tech uses simple ingredients for rich savory flavor Perfect for parties

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives

Instructions

  • Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter with the olive oil. Add the thinly sliced onions, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and stir to coat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes until the onions have softened.
  • Sprinkle the brown sugar (if using) over the onions and continue to cook, stirring every 5-10 minutes, for another 30-40 minutes, until deep golden brown and soft. If the pan gets too dry, add a tablespoon of water. Let the onions cool completely.
  • Combine the Base: In a medium bowl, combine the sour cream and softened cream cheese. Beat them together until smooth and creamy.
  • Bring It All Together: Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and most of the chives (save a little for garnish). Fold in the cooled caramelized onions until well combined. Taste and adjust seasonings.
  • Chill and Serve: Transfer the dip to a serving bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least an hour. Garnish with remaining chives and serve.
