Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground breakfast sausage
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 6 slices bread, cubed
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup diced onions or bell peppers (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat and Prep: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease your 9×13 inch baking dish with a little butter or non-stick spray.
  • Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage (and onions/peppers if using) until the sausage is browned and cooked through. Drain off any excess grease.
  • Whisk the Egg Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, dry mustard, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until it’s perfectly smooth and combined.
  • Layer it Up: Spread the cubed bread evenly in the bottom of your prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the cooked sausage (and veggies) over the bread. Top with 1 cup of the cheddar cheese and all of the Parmesan cheese. Slowly pour the egg mixture over everything, pressing down gently to make sure every bit of bread gets soaked.
  • Bake to Perfection: Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese on top. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the center is fully set and the top is a beautiful golden brown.
  • Rest and Serve: Let the casserole stand for about 5-10 minutes before cutting into squares. This helps it set up perfectly for serving.

Notes

A hearty and comforting breakfast casserole with savory sausage, creamy eggs, and melty cheese. Perfect for busy mornings, weekend brunches, and feeding a crowd.
